[Saba Sports News] American badminton player Benedict Chen posted about being bullied by teammate Beiwen Zhang, accusing her of using the resources and system of the U.S. Badminton Association for personal gain, and oppressing other members just to secure a few extra minutes of court time. Benedict Chen stated that the recent recipient of the Ken Davidson Award should represent exceptional sportsmanship, yet she is the person who squeezed herself out of the court for two hours during the 2023 Kumamoto Badminton Masters. Benedict Chen revealed that this experience was especially memorable as it was her first time participating in a Super 500 level event, only to face such embarrassment in front of sponsors. Shortly after, she lost the support of her sponsors.
Benedict Chen believes that the Ken Davidson Award should be given to those who maintain kindness and grace both on and off the court. Winning matches and becoming a so-called “stronger” player does not grant one the right to trample on others, especially those who are still growing or simply looking to gain experience. Benedict Chen hopes the team can compete in a fair environment, rather than being undermined by those who should be teammates. As for the bullying allegations against her, Beiwen Zhang has not yet responded.
The editor believes that when facing bullying from teammates, the most effective response is not to argue or retaliate, but to protect oneself, establish firm boundaries, continue to grow, and decisively distance oneself from toxic environments when necessary. One’s worth is not defined by the abuser; true freedom comes from inner stability and a focus on personal growth.
