[Saba Sports News] According to Spanish media reports, with Thibaut Courtois sidelined due to injury, Andriy Lunin, Real Madrid’s backup goalkeeper, will face another test. It is never easy to serve as a backup goalkeeper at any top club, and the job becomes even more challenging at a team where Courtois is between the posts. The Belgian goalkeeper delivers outstanding performances in every match, and hardly anyone can displace him from the starting lineup when both are fully fit. However, with Courtois currently injured, a reliable backup goalkeeper has become crucial—and Real Madrid have exactly such a player in Lunin. The Ukrainian goalkeeper has made only three appearances so far this season. He came on as a second-half substitute for Courtois in the game against Manchester United, and he is highly likely to keep his starting place for the upcoming Madrid derby.
The editor believes that Real Madrid do not need to worry excessively even without Courtois, as Lunin has proven his considerable quality on many occasions. In fact, during the 2023/24 season when Real Madrid last won the UEFA Champions League, it was Lunin who started all the knockout matches against RB Leipzig, Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
