[Saba Sports News] The 2026 Badminton Asia Championships has come to a successful conclusion, leaving behind many memorable moments, yet also some regrets for the players. Among them, the withdrawal of Thai star Dechapol Puavaranukroh from the mixed doubles final due to injury after qualifying was the most regrettable.
Yesterday, the Thai national badminton team flew back to Thailand to begin preparations for the Thomas & Uber Cup to be held in late April. The President of the Badminton Association of Thailand greeted the team at the airport, inquiring about Dechapol’s physical condition and having brief conversations with other players. At the airport, Dechapol spoke to the media and explained the details of his withdrawal. It turned out that after winning his semi-final match, he suffered from severe dehydration that led to full-body cramps. Post-match tests showed abnormally elevated kidney indicators, and doctors identified a health risk, advising an immediate halt to competition to protect his long-term health.
The Badminton Association of Thailand has made it clear that Dechapol’s participation in the upcoming Thomas Cup will depend on his physical recovery. If he makes a full recovery, the association will fully support his representing Thailand. Currently, Dechapol is under medical observation and treatment. While he has expressed his eagerness to return to the court, medical evaluations and health safety remain the top priorities.
In our view, Dechapol’s decision to withdraw followed medical advice and reflected a responsible attitude toward his long-term athletic health. Although it caused competitive regret, it is in line with sportsmanship and medical ethics.
