[Saba Sports News] With Gianpiero Lambiase set to join McLaren, focus across the Formula 1 paddock has shifted beyond his move itself to the subtle ripple effects that may emerge during the transition period. Former F1 driver David Coulthard issued a recent warning, stating that Lambiase could face an awkward situation before his departure from Red Bull Racing.
According to confirmed reports, Lambiase will join McLaren as Chief Race Officer no later than 2028, reporting directly to Team Principal Andrea Stella. He remains under contract with Red Bull for the time being and must continue fulfilling his duties with the team in the interim. However, this scenario — knowing his departure is confirmed while still remaining in his current role — has complicated the situation.
Coulthard pointed out that Red Bull will inevitably have to draw clear boundaries on sensitive information, especially core content regarding future car development. While Lambiase cannot take digital data with him, there is no way to restrict the technical and strategic knowledge he has stored in his mind. As time goes on, Red Bull is highly likely to limit Lambiase’s involvement in technical discussions for the 2027 season and beyond, in order to prevent potential information leaks. Such arrangements are not uncommon in F1 history. Coulthard recalled his own move from Williams to McLaren, noting that though he continued to race normally, he was barred from accessing certain core team departments ahead of his transfer.
In my opinion, Lambiase’s departure is a normal career decision following the expiration of his contract, and Red Bull has long been aware of the plan and prepared transitional replacements. Hence, his exit should not be labelled as a hidden risk, but rather regarded as a natural personnel turnover within the professional career cycle of Formula 1.
