Colwill is expected to be one of the best central defenders in England, despite failing to make the England squad last season because of injuries and appearances at left-back. His performance has proved that. Colwill has yet to develop a deep connection with Chelsea fans in the same way as Conor Gallagher or Reece James, but he is seen as an elite talent at Cobham’s academy. In the future, he could be club captain and it would be a huge loss to leave before that potential is realised.
Chelsea’s new manager Enzo Maresca wants his central defence to be comfortable under pressure and able to defend high up. Colwill fits Maresca perfectly. No matter how much money Chelsea can get for Colwill, it will be small consolation relative to his future potential. Chelsea are well aware of this and have listed Colwill as not for sale.
