Multiple media outlets have pointed to Chelsea’s recent internal power struggle as pushing the team to the brink. At the center of the dispute are Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly, two of Chelsea’s biggest shareholders, in a growing rift that the press said could lead to further chaos in the short term.
Clear Lake’s disagreement with Todd Burley centered on control of the team. On paper, Clear Lake owns 61.5% of Chelsea, while Todd Burley owns 38.5%, which is to be shared with his partners Hansjorg Wyss and Mark Walter. Over time, however, as Clear Lake Capital gradually increased its control over the team’s operations, especially in football operations and player transactions, the differences between Todd Burley and Clear Lake became more apparent.
