Talking about Reaves’ change in mentality after joining the NBA and getting a big contract, Spencer said: “In fact, his mentality has not changed, because he has been counter-attacking all the way until the other people noticed him in his junior year.” Then he learned how to be a role player, and then his role on the team became more and more important, in fact, similar to the trajectory of the Lakers. People said he couldn’t play Division I, that he couldn’t play in the NBA, and he didn’t. But he signed a contract worth tens of millions two years later and proved them wrong. I’m super proud of him.”

Asked if Reeves expected to be an All-Star, Spencer said, “He loves basketball and he loves to compete, and I think he can shine in any role.” If he is given a bigger role in the future, I am sure he will do well. If that role requires him to average 20 points per game, I think he can do that. But I don’t think the All-Star honors will blind him, because he definitely wants a championship more than the individual honors of the All-Star, and I don’t think Austin will care about that.”
