[Saba Sports News] In the men’s singles round of 16 at the Denmark Open, top seed Viktor Axelsen, competing at home, reportedly experienced health issues and requested to withdraw from the match, missing out on the quarterfinals. The match against French young player Alex Lanier was quite close. In the second game, when Axelsen was trailing 1-3, he felt very unwell and even nauseous to the point of vomiting, leading him to request a lengthy medical timeout. After communicating with medical staff, Axelsen chose to continue playing. Clearly, in front of his hometown fans, the two-time Olympic champion did not want to withdraw and disappoint the spectators. However, in his unwell condition, Axelsen was unable to perform well and ultimately chose to retire when he was down 7-11. Fans with medical expertise noted that vomiting during badminton matches can be caused by factors such as excessive exercise, improper diet before exercise, high blood pressure, low blood sugar, and insufficient blood supply to the brain. High-intensity exercise can lead to muscle fatigue and increased energy expenditure, along with risks of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. If the body cannot adapt to such intense activity, it may trigger discomfort such as nausea and vomiting.
