[Saba Sports News] The 13th Big Bash League (BBL) introduced a groundbreaking change, replacing the coin toss with a ‘bat flip’ to decide batting or bowling orders. Captains now call ‘hills’ or ‘roofs’ and ‘flats’ during this flip, with the away team captain having the privilege to call. The bat must complete a full rotation before landing to count.
This change was highlighted in the Sydney Thunders vs Brisbane Heat match when the bat landed on its edge, leading to a re-toss. The move, reminiscent of backyard cricket, has stirred controversy, with some questioning its reliability compared to the traditional coin toss.
Kookaburra’s Shannon Gill, however, explained their efforts to craft bats with symmetrical weight to ensure fairness.
The BBL13’s bat flip, while aiming to appeal to younger audiences and add excitement to the game’s start, has faced criticism for straying from cricket’s traditional values.
Cricket Australia’s Kim McConnie emphasized the league’s goal to engage families and young fans, suggesting the bat flip creates a more relevant and engaging moment than the conventional coin toss.
