Jasprit Bumrah, a fast bowler, has received criticism
for violating level one of the ICC Code of Conduct during India’s Test match
against England in Hyderabad. After being found guilty, he received one demerit
point.
Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players
and Player Support Personnel, relates to “inappropriate physical contact
with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other
person (including a spectator during an International Match”.
It was Bumrah’s first infraction in a full year, and
he agreed to the match referee Richie Richardson’s suggested punishment,
negating the need for a formal hearing.
The incident happened in England’s second innings, in
the 81st over. Ollie Pope, who finished with 196 runs, attempted to run after
Ollie Pope pushed a delivery through the off side. However, Bumrah was said to
have deliberately blocked Pope’s path, which resulted in physical contact. Pope
appeared to be upset and even though Bumrah raised his hands in apology, he
confronted the on-field umpires.
During the match, Bumrah took six wickets, including
four for 41 in the second innings. Ben Duckett and Joe Root were both removed
in consecutive overs during his brilliant stint in the second innings, after he
had tricked Ben Stokes for seventy runs in the opening over.
India had a 190-run advantage in the first innings but
lost the first of five Test matches against England by a margin of 28 runs.
Beginning on February 2, the second Test will take place in Visakhapatnam.
