[Saba Sports News] Recently, three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick, while analyzing the penalty given to Lewis Hamilton during the Singapore Grand Prix, stated that the seven-time F1 world champion received too lenient a penalty – only five seconds – for multiple instances of “cutting the corner.” Towards the end of the Singapore Grand Prix, Hamilton was forced to slow down due to a brake system issue and struggled to finish the race. However, post-race, he received a five-second time penalty for “leaving the track multiple times without justifiable reason,” ultimately dropping him from seventh to eighth place in the final classification. Chadwick stated bluntly on Sky Sports’ F1 program: “I don’t think Lewis should have been cutting the corner like that. Frankly, that should have been a more severe penalty than five seconds because he likely gained more than five seconds through those shortcuts.” When asked if Hamilton should have been disqualified due to the car’s condition, she explained that disqualification should only be considered if the team ignored a “black and orange flag”: “He didn’t completely lose the brakes; if that happened, he wouldn’t have been able to finish at all. As long as he can bring the car back safely, that’s fine. But the problem is he was cutting the corner, and that part was indeed a regulation breach.” Therefore, Chadwick concluded: “Hamilton did have a mechanical issue, which isn’t his fault. But he shouldn’t have cut the corner multiple times, and a five-second penalty is too light. It’s as simple as that.”
