[Saba Sports News] The Malaysian Badminton Masters is currently in full swing. In a men’s doubles match during the round of 16, the referee’s series of calls drew strong dissatisfaction from Malaysia. During the match between Malaysian pair Kang Khai Xing and Aaron Tai against Danish duo Jesper Toft and Andreas Sondergaard, there was a controversial call. In the deciding set, Aaron Tai ducked out of the way of Jesper Toft’s return, with the shuttlecock going out of bounds. However, the umpire ruled that the shuttlecock had touched Aaron Tai’s ear, awarding the point to the Danish pair. This decision sparked intense boos from the crowd, ultimately resulting in the Malaysian men’s doubles team losing the match. Afterward, the Malaysian coaching staff expressed strong discontent. The head coach of the Malaysian men’s doubles team stated, “We can accept losing, but the competition must be fair.” He pointed out that these repeated questionable calls affected the psychological state of young players. “If it were one or two instances, we might be able to accept it, but three such controversial calls are too much,” he added. The editor believes that this may indicate that some referees’ professional level and judgment skills need improvement. In some rulings, the referee may not have accurately determined whether the shuttlecock landed correctly or if there was any contact with the player, leading to incorrect judgments. Additionally, when athletes and coaches protest, the handling method of the referees may also be inappropriate, lacking sufficient explanation or reasonable resolution, thereby exacerbating the conflict.
