[Saba Sports News] In the past decade, Ferrari cars have repeatedly set the fastest lap times in preseason testing, but these impressive results have never translated into genuine championship competitiveness. Damon Hill, the 1996 F1 World Champion, bluntly pointed out that Ferrari’s pursuit of lap times in testing is completely meaningless and could even mislead external perceptions of their true capabilities.
Records show that since Kimi Raikkonen won the Drivers’ Championship in 2007 and the Constructors’ Championship in 2008, the Ferrari team has been out of contention for the championship for many years. Nevertheless, as each new season approaches, positive signals and testing lap times from Maranello continue to ignite fans’ expectations.
Data indicates that in the last ten preseason tests, Ferrari cars ranked fastest five times, but they failed to win the championship in these seasons, with some years not even securing a single race victory. Hill believes the problem lies not in the testing itself but in the excessive significance attributed to the test results. He pointed out that winter testing lap times often differ significantly from true competitive performance and may even present a deliberate illusion. Some teams deliberately increase fuel loads during testing to hide their true strength, while others do the opposite, reducing fuel to achieve the fastest lap times.
In my view, sponsors, the media, and fans all yearn to see positive signals, and the Ferrari team, in particular, bears enormous expectations from the entire nation. This pressure also drives them to pursue top lap times in testing.
