[Saba Sports News] Although he has started the 2026 season strongly, George Russell’s long-term future at Mercedes remains uncertain. Former F1 world champion Damon Hill bluntly said that Russell’s position within the team has never been secure, and even if he were to win an F1 world championship, that might not guarantee his future. Industry figures including Johnny Herbert have pointed out that Max Verstappen’s unsettled situation at Red Bull has reignited transfer rumors linking him to Mercedes. If the four-time world champion’s move were to happen, the current lineup would almost certainly be reshuffled, and Russell is widely seen as the most likely to be affected.
On performance, Russell is still one of the title contenders this season, but the internal picture is shifting. Young teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Chinese Grand Prix victory quickly raised his standing and intensified competition within the team. Team principal Toto Wolff has invested heavily in Antonelli’s development, and that relationship is viewed as an important factor in future decisions.
The editor believes Russell went through a tough negotiating period when he last renewed his Mercedes contract. Although the new deal reportedly includes performance-linked protections, the real strength of those safeguards remains uncertain in today’s competitive environment.
