[Saba Sports News] arius Johnson-Odom, a former teammate of Kobe Bryant during the 2012-13 season, shared some invaluable advice he received from the NBA legend. In an interview with Sam Okauru, Johnson-Odom recounted a moment when his intense emotions got the better of him during practice.
After an altercation with teammate Jordan Hill, Kobe pulled him aside and advised, “Don’t say anything to people like that. Just hoop. If you let your emotions take over, you won’t be effective in practice or games.”
Johnson-Odom explained that Kobe’s guidance wasn’t just about physical effort but also the mental approach to the game. Kobe emphasized the importance of controlling emotions and staying focused, which Johnson-Odom recognized as essential for success both on and off the court.
Despite Kobe’s advice, Johnson-Odom’s NBA career was short-lived. Drafted 55th overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 2012, he was traded to the Lakers and spent most of his rookie season in the D League. He had limited opportunities with the Lakers, appearing in only four games before being waived mid-season.
After brief stints overseas and with the Philadelphia 76ers, his NBA career ended with just seven games played.
Johnson-Odom continued his basketball journey in Europe and currently plays for Orleans Loiret Basket in France.
