[Saba Sports News] Recently, F1 Director of Broadcast and Media Dean Lock responded to comments repeatedly made over the radio by Fernando Alonso during the F1 Mexican Grand Prix. Alonso’s race was filled with drama as he continuously pointed out over the radio that several drivers – notably Liam Lawson and Carlos Sainz – had cut Turns 1 and 2 at the start and rejoined the track early, essentially putting on a “radio show.” The Spanish driver didn’t miss any opportunity to highlight the issue, stating over the radio, “I am in this position by following the rules, this is very unfair, so we have to do something.” The stewards’ decision to take no further action only intensified the two-time world champion’s sarcastic tone over the radio. His on-track “performance” continued until he retired from the race due to a suspected brake issue. Speaking to Motorsport.com, Lock addressed Alonso’s repeated use of the radio to relay messages to both FOM (Formula One Management) and the race stewards during the Mexican GP: “We have a responsibility to tell the story of the race fairly and accurately – so we are not going to put out anything that is misleading or has another agenda. Fernando is incredible; it’s admirable that he can think about these things while driving the car. But we are not his mouthpiece.” Lock emphasized that the goal, of course, is to delight fans with the most engaging and entertaining team radio moments, but while avoiding causing misunderstandings or excessive hype.
