[Saba Sports News] With the FIA’s slight modifications to the racing regulations ahead of the 2026 season, Valtteri Bottas will no longer have to serve a five-position grid penalty that was originally imposed. This means he can start normally in the Australian Grand Prix without any qualifying penalties. The punishment stemmed from a violation during the 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Bottas was penalized for infractions in the race. He was set to receive a five-place grid drop in the next race. However, he did not participate in the 2025 season and served as a reserve driver for Mercedes, so the penalty was never executed.
Last summer, reports suggested that once Bottas returned to the F1 grid, he would still need to serve this penalty. At that time, the FIA indicated that under the existing rules, there was no mechanism to retrospectively modify penalties that had already been implemented. However, with further adjustments to the new sporting regulations for the 2026 season, the situation has changed. The updated rules clearly state that any unserved grid penalties must be completed within 12 months of the penalty being imposed; otherwise, the penalty will no longer apply.
The editor believes that compared to the previous regulation stating that penalties would be enforced during a driver’s next race, the new version introduces a clear time limit. This modification helps prevent historical penalties from disrupting the competitive order of the current season, making it especially more favorable for returning drivers.
