[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, FIFA is facing scrutiny and has been asked to explain where the millions of pounds in royalties from the 2010 World Cup theme song “Waka Waka,” performed by Shakira, have been spent. Sony Music stated that they have transferred all proceeds from the song to FIFA. However, Freshlyground, the South African band that participated in the recording and performed the song on stage with Shakira during the World Cup, said they have been unable to trace the whereabouts of these funds, particularly the royalties received by FIFA over the past 10 years. However, there is currently no evidence to suggest that FIFA misused or mishandled the funds. It is estimated that the amount is at least £7 million. Reportedly, Sony has attempted to communicate with FIFA multiple times regarding this matter but has received no response. Although the funds were once used for football facility construction in 15 countries, the charity established by FIFA to manage these funds appears to have ceased operations in 2014. However, FIFA stated that they continue to support the 20 centers built as part of the 2010 World Cup legacy project. In a statement, FIFA said: “Our total investment in the construction and operational support of these centers far exceeds the royalty income FIFA received from the 2010 World Cup official soundtrack.” Fifteen years after its release, “Waka Waka” remains a popular football anthem and has been adapted by many fans into chants for their teams.
