[Saba Sports News] The 2026 FIFA World Cup across the United States, Canada and Mexico is around the corner, yet a blunder has occurred in FIFA’s ticketing system. A technical glitch during checkout on FIFA’s official ticketing website led roughly 60 fans to successfully obtain World Cup tickets at zero cost by accident.
This stroke of luck did not last long, though. FIFA confirmed that the error took place during payment processing on June 3. Due to a malfunction in the payment system, some fans received confirmation notices showing a price of 0 US dollars after completing their purchases, believing they had got tickets for free.
Instead of cancelling the bookings outright, FIFA has kept the tickets reserved for the affected fans. The governing body stated that the fans must settle the actual ticket fees within seven days. Otherwise, their reserved seats will be revoked and the tickets removed from their accounts. FIFA issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience caused by the technical failure. The ticketing platform added that all these zero-price tickets were for group stage matches held in Toronto, Canada.
In my view, consumers should not be held responsible for technical errors. FIFA’s approach of apologizing while demanding payment reeks of double standards. This incident has seriously damaged its credibility. If the 60 fans stage a collective refusal to pay, it could trigger a class-action lawsuit.
