[Saba Sports News] Recently, the General Assembly of the Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) has unanimously adopted a resolution to introduce an additional U21 competition for Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga clubs starting from the 2026–27 season. Designed as a voluntary supplementary option for all top-flight and second-division clubs covering transitional age groups, the new tournament complements the existing league structure and does not require reserve teams to be independent. No extra squad needs to be formed; instead, it is aimed at existing transitional players from the U17 to U21 age groups. In addition, each team may field up to four slightly older players, allowing targeted development of young talents while also helping injured players regain match fitness after long layoffs. The format consists of two independent series run on a league basis, with the best-performing teams from each advancing to a final phase. Flexible squad registration and variable match schedules within dedicated time slots provide clubs with a high degree of flexibility.
The editor believes that top-class youth development is a key factor in the future competitiveness and appeal of the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. However, in recent years, the results in youth and transitional-age player development have been unsatisfactory. The new U21 supplementary competition will enable talented players to gain more competitive playing time and targetedly extend their development cycle.
