[Saba Sports News] The esteemed Women’s Premier League (WPL) is already celebrated for its rich history and cherished moments. Reflecting on this, a trip down memory lane evokes memories of the inaugural IPL auction and its first auctioneer, a milestone in India’s premier T20 event, the Indian Premier League (IPL). With each season, new chapters are written, particularly since the introduction of the women’s league competition. Richard Madley, the IPL’s renowned first auctioneer, is a figure hard to forget.
Mallika Sagar, having successfully led two seasons of the WPL, is now set to create history as the first female auctioneer at the premier men’s event. She is slated to conduct the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai on December 19. In this context, Madley recently shared his warm wishes to Sagar on social media, highlighting the prestige of conducting the world’s most high-profile auction and conveying his best regards.
“Good luck Mallika Sagar as you prepare for the #IPL2024Auction. This is a tremendous honor and I wish you the best. I cherish my own memories of the event,” Madley expressed on his social media handle ‘X’.
IPL history features several notable auctioneers. While Sagar is the first woman in this role, she joins a line of distinguished predecessors in the league’s history. Richard Madley led many iconic IPL auctions for nearly a decade, starting from 2008 until the 2018 edition. Following him, Hugh Edmeades took over, who once experienced a medical emergency, postural hypotension, during an auction. This incident led to Charu Sharma becoming the first Indian to helm the coveted IPL auction under emergency circumstances.
