[Saba Sports News] Ja Morant may have ditched the gun gestures, but he’s still sticking to a weapons theme.
During Tuesday’s game against the Charlotte Hornets, the Memphis Grizzlies star unveiled a new celebration after hitting a three over veteran big man Taj Gibson.
Morant mimed pulling the pin from a grenade with his teeth, then tossed the imaginary explosive into the crowd — even covering his ears in anticipation of the “blast.” Grizzlies color commentator Brevin Knight could be heard trying to figure out exactly what Morant had just done.
The two-time All-Star has been in hot water with the league multiple times over real and mimed weapon gestures. Just last week, he was warned by the NBA for exchanging finger gun gestures with Warriors guard Buddy Hield — a moment that followed previous suspensions for flashing real firearms on social media.
Morant didn’t seem too concerned, responding with another gun gesture in his next game, which earned him a $75,000 fine.
Whether the league will take issue with Morant’s new grenade celebration remains to be seen. But with the Grizzlies cruising to a 124–100 win, Morant was clearly feeling himself — and testing the limits once again.
