[Saba Sports News] Jeff Bezos has been frequently linked to buying an NFL team, but he might be eyeing an NBA franchise instead.
On a recent episode of “The Ringer” podcast, Bill Simmons mentioned there’s “legitimate buzz” about Bezos potentially buying the Boston Celtics. Simmons added that the NBA is interested in seeing the Celtics sell for $6 billion to set a benchmark for future expansion teams, and Bezos could be a serious contender.
“There’s been some legitimate buzz about Jeff Bezos buying the Celtics,” Simmons said. “I think it’s real. I think he’s going to be one of the suitors.”
Simmons suggested that Bezos might be drawn to the Celtics because they are one of the NBA’s premier franchises, making the purchase a symbolic move for him.
This is the first time we’ve heard about Bezos possibly buying an NBA team. He was previously linked to the NFL’s Washington Commanders but ultimately did not pursue the bid. There have been rumors that Bezos might prefer to wait for another NFL team to come on the market.
The Celtics are undoubtedly one of the NBA’s top franchises, which could appeal to Bezos, one of the world’s wealthiest individuals. He’s one of the few who could afford the $6 billion price tag without relying heavily on other investors.
The bidding for the Celtics is expected to be competitive, with one of the current co-owners also planning to be part of the process.
