[Saba Sports News] Minnesota Timberwolves legend Kevin Garnett is the latest Hall of Famer to address Anthony Edwards’ controversial remarks about past NBA eras.
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Edwards claimed that, apart from Michael Jordan, NBA players before the 1990s were not particularly skilled. Magic Johnson and Isiah Thomas, stars of the era just before the ’90s, have both responded critically to Edwards’ comments.
Garnett and Paul Pierce also discussed the issue on a recent episode of the “KG Certified” podcast, strongly disagreeing with Edwards’ assessment. Pierce acknowledged that while today’s players might be more skilled, the modern approach to basketball is often too individualistic.
Garnett suggested that the NBA has become less mature, with players more focused on personal branding and social media. “The skill level has gotten better,” Pierce said, “But I don’t think it makes you a better player overall.”
Garnett added, “I only think half of these kids in the league could have been on an NBA team 20 years ago. The locker room was too grown. It was a different vibration.” He also pointed out that current rules allow for more freedom of movement, giving offensive players more room to showcase their skills.
While Magic and Isiah’s responses may not have swayed Edwards, Garnett’s words might resonate more with the young Timberwolves star.
