[Saba Sports News] Kevin Love is setting the record straight after becoming the center of a viral debate involving top prospect Cooper Flagg.
The discussion kicked off when veteran sports broadcaster Dan Patrick made waves by suggesting that Flagg would be viewed as a “disappointment” if his NBA career mirrored Love’s. The comment, made on The Dan Patrick Show, sparked heated reactions across social media. While some agreed—given Flagg’s sky-high potential—many felt it disrespected Love’s accomplished NBA resume.
On Friday, Love addressed the conversation directly via X, offering a humble and classy perspective.
“For those who will take this as a shot at me…I don’t take it as such,” Love wrote. “I was pure skill & will. Cooper is far more talented than I ever was and if he stays healthy will have a far better career. He could very well have a statue by the time he’s finished. I’m a HUGE fan.”
Love, a five-time All-Star and two-time All-NBA selection, entered the league in 2008 with modest expectations out of UCLA. He went on to win a championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and was a double-double machine during his prime years in Minnesota, averaging roughly 20 points and 12 rebounds per game. However, he didn’t make the playoffs until he joined forces with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving.
Though Love never carried a playoff team as the lead star, he carved out an undeniably successful career—and even he believes Flagg could surpass it. The 17-year-old Flagg is considered a generational talent and has already drawn comparisons to some of the NBA’s all-time greats.
Rather than taking offense, Love embraced the moment with grace—acknowledging both his own journey and the bright future ahead for Flagg.
