[Saba Sports News] For the first time since his rookie year, Klay Thompson played off the bench on Thursday, and he credited thinking of an NBA legend for helping him adjust to the role. In leading the Golden State Warriors to a 140-137 victory against the Utah Jazz, Thompson scored 35 points and grabbed 6 rebounds, hitting 7 out of 13 three-point attempts.
He shared with reporters post-game that reflecting on Manu Ginobili’s illustrious career with the San Antonio Spurs, which included four NBA championships and a gold medal while mostly coming off the bench, inspired him. Thompson admired Ginobili’s Hall of Fame-worthy career and embraced his own bench role with a similar mindset.
Ginobili’s example showed Thompson that contributing significantly doesn’t necessarily require starting the game. Thompson acknowledged the importance of setting aside his ego, understanding that playing time, not starting status, is what truly matters.
This shift could prove strategic for Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, especially if Thompson continues to excel in this capacity. The move has sparked questions about Thompson’s ability to sustain this performance and mindset throughout the season, should the bench role persist.
However, Thompson’s recent attitude and standout game suggest he’s adapting well to the change.
