[Saba Sports News] Klay Thompson, who has spent his entire NBA career with one team, may be eyeing a change.
The 34-year-old, now an unrestricted free agent, is attracting interest from teams beyond the Golden State Warriors this offseason. According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, there is “strong mutual interest” between Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks, signaling a potential departure from his long-standing team. Other reports have also linked Thompson to the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets as possible landing spots.
Selected by the Warriors as the No. 11 overall pick in 2011, Thompson has been a five-time All-Star with the team. However, his performance has seen fluctuations since returning from knee and Achilles injuries that sidelined him for two consecutive seasons from 2019 to 2021. Last season, he averaged 17.9 points per game, marking his lowest since his second year in the NBA.
The Mavericks, fresh off an NBA Finals appearance, have substantial commitments to stars Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, with over $84 million already allocated for next season, placing them well above the salary cap. They recently traded Tim Hardaway Jr. to Detroit to create space for re-signing Derrick Jones Jr., potentially indicating a desire to add another sharpshooter like Thompson to their roster.
