La Liga believes this pause violates the law, while the players’ union argues that it is not a strike, but rather a protest protected by freedom of speech.
Currently, the relationship between La Liga and the players’ union is at a low point. There was a period of close cooperation earlier, but disagreements have arisen again due to La Liga’s proposed “Miami Plan.” Players chose to pause for 15 seconds after the whistle in the 9th round to express dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency and the attempt to move the Villarreal vs. Barcelona match to the U.S. without consulting them. This action has led to accusations from La Liga and indirectly resulted in the failure of the “Miami Plan.”
