[Saba Sports News] The Los Angeles Lakers are conducting a thorough search for their new head coach, and one candidate might be standing out.
According to Jovan Buha and Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Lakers are particularly interested in ESPN analyst and former NBA sharpshooter JJ Redick. The team reportedly sees Redick as a “Pat Riley-like coaching prospect” who could succeed with the current Lakers core and help transition into the post-LeBron James era.
Riley was 36 and just four years removed from playing when he was named head coach of the Lakers in 1981, leading the team to four NBA titles during the “Showtime” era.
Redick and LeBron James recently launched their “Mind the Game” podcast together, leading many to believe Redick is a favorite for the Lakers job. However, LeBron has reportedly distanced himself from the coaching search and is not advocating for Redick.
Though Redick lacks coaching experience, he played in the NBA for 14 seasons from 2006-2021. He has interviewed for the Charlotte Hornets job and has been considered for other vacancies.
The Lakers have met with several candidates and are not rushing their decision. Besides Redick, another well-known former head coach is also under serious consideration.
