Since then, the team’s performance has sharply declined. On Friday night, the Lakers lost their grip on a 13-point lead against the Memphis Grizzlies, ultimately suffering a 127-113 defeat. This marks their fourth consecutive loss, contributing to a wider slump of 10 losses in their last 13 games, bringing their season record to a disappointing 17-19.
Post-game, LeBron James expressed his frustration, telling ESPN, “I mean, we just suck right now.” The Lakers’ current form is so dismal that James even suggested college players could potentially step in and contribute, specifically mentioning his son, Bronny James. “He could play for us right now. Easy,” James stated, as reported by Claire De Lune. This comment could be seen as both a compliment to Bronny and a critique of the Lakers’ current roster.
Bronny, currently a freshman at USC, overcame a serious cardiac episode last summer to make a remarkable recovery and debuted for the Trojans in December. In his six appearances so far, without any starts, he has achieved a 50% field goal rate, averaging 7.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game.
These statistics aren’t overwhelmingly impressive, suggesting that LeBron’s belief in Bronny’s readiness to play for the Lakers might be more a reflection of the team’s struggles than a testament to Bronny’s current skill level.
