[Saba Sports News] The Dallas Mavericks are making a bold move to address their injury-plagued frontcourt.
According to NBA reporter Chris Haynes, the Mavs plan to sign free agent center Kai Jones to a two-way contract once he clears waivers.
Jones was among the players cut by the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday following their 106-102 loss to the Lakers.
Dallas is currently dealing with a shortage of big men due to multiple injuries. Newly acquired Anthony Davis suffered a left adductor strain in his debut game, while Daniel Gafford sustained a Grade 3 MCL sprain just one game later.
Both players joined starting center Dereck Lively II on the injured list, as the promising second-year big man has been sidelined since Jan. 14 with a stress fracture in his right ankle. In their absence, the Mavs have leaned on journeyman center Moses Brown.
Jones saw limited action in his 28 games with the Clippers, averaging just 2.2 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks in 7.4 minutes per game.
However, his signing carries some intrigue given his athleticism and potential upside.
The 23-year-old was previously at the center of controversy due to bizarre social media activity two offseasons ago, but he has since spoken about moving forward from his troubled past.
