[Saba Sports News] After the Miami Grand Prix, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was handed a post-race penalty. He received a five-second time penalty from the FIA for crossing the line while exiting the pit lane following his pit stop. Nevertheless, due to the large finishing gap between him and the drivers ahead and behind, the penalty did not alter his final fifth-place result.
The controversy unfolded in the early stages of the race. After the safety car was deployed following a multi-car incident, Verstappen opted to pit on Lap 6 for hard tyres, aiming to gain track position through strategy. As he completed his pit stop and drove out of the pit lane, broadcast footage appeared to show him crossing the white exit line. Limited camera angles at the time meant the race stewards did not issue an immediate verdict, instead deciding to review additional footage after the race. In the post-race investigation, stewards examined onboard footage as well as video from multiple external angles. They ultimately confirmed that the outer edge of Verstappen’s front-left tyre crossed the solid line at the pit lane exit, violating the relevant sporting regulations. The stewards subsequently imposed a five-second time penalty, explaining that while the infringement was minor, it constituted a clear line violation and had to be dealt with in accordance with the rules.
During the hearing, Verstappen stated that the full-course yellow flags were active at the time, and he was focused on safely merging back onto the track with no intention of crossing the line deliberately. His explanation, however, did not reverse the decision. Even so, this minor infringement had no material impact on the race progression and brought him no direct positional advantage.
In my opinion, Red Bull have shown clear signs of a recovery at the Miami Grand Prix, with upgrades to the RB22 car starting to yield results. Verstappen also claimed his best finish of the season so far. Though the penalty sparked some debate, it did not overshadow his solid race outcome.
