Verstappen stated that his father was once one of the sponsors of PSV Eindhoven, so he was frequently invited to watch the club’s matches, which gradually turned him into a die-hard fan. He even said he would give up winning any F1 races for an entire year just to see PSV Eindhoven lift the UEFA Champions League trophy.
Records show PSV claimed its last Champions League title nine years before Verstappen was born. Since then, major shifts in European football’s financial landscape have made it far harder for clubs from smaller football nations to compete for the top European honour. Fortunately, PSV Eindhoven has staged a strong comeback in recent years. This season, they secured the Eredivisie title with a double-digit points gap, sealing a historic three consecutive league championships. Even so, the club’s performances in the Champions League have been unsatisfactory over the years. Some fans joke that it is much harder for PSV Eindhoven to win the Champions League than for Verstappen to secure eight straight F1 world titles.
In my opinion, Verstappen’s support for PSV Eindhoven fits well with his Dutch identity, and also reflects his admiration for successful teams. PSV’s dominant form in domestic leagues aligns perfectly with his persistent pursuit of victory in Formula 1.
