[Saba Sports News] Rumors about Max Verstappen’s potential transfer are intensifying. Former F1 driver Johnny Herbert recently revealed that Mercedes has made key progress in developing its engine for the 2026 regulations, which could be a decisive factor in convincing Verstappen to leave. The four-time F1 champion may be strongly attracted to what could become a “champion engine.” Herbert pointed out that Mercedes has taken a lead in developing the new rule-compliant engine. The new regulations will introduce 50% electrification, sustainable fuel, and active aerodynamics, among other changes. Mercedes had previously dominated the era when similar rule changes were introduced in 2014. Now, the same scenario might happen again. Herbert compared Verstappen’s situation to Lewis Hamilton’s decision to switch from McLaren to Mercedes. He believes that Toto Wolff and Verstappen have already had in-depth discussions, and Verstappen has realized the uncertainties of Red Bull’s power unit transition. Mercedes, on the other hand, could provide a potential championship car, which would satisfy his desire for race victories and car stability.
