[Saba Sports News] George Russell is actively pushing for contract renewal negotiations with Mercedes, although there is no set deadline yet, he hopes to make progress in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, rumors that Max Verstappen might join Mercedes and replace Russell are growing, making his future uncertain. Russell has always been seen as a long-term core player since joining Mercedes, but the 2026 driver lineup is still undetermined. Despite Russell’s strong performance this season, with one win and multiple podium finishes, it is reported that he is the one being replaced for Verstappen. Team principal Toto Wolff stated that he hopes to finalize the decision before the summer break and respects the interests of all parties involved. Former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner revealed that Mercedes may offer Russell a short-term contract valid only until the end of 2026, reserving a spot for Verstappen in 2027; however, Russell hopes to sign a three-year long-term contract. Steiner believes that if Russell refuses the short contract, he may leave Mercedes.
