[Saba Sports News] On January 30, Olympic bronze medalist Watanabe Yuta publicly explained his departure from the national team via social media for the first time. He stated that the reason for leaving was the deteriorating financial situation of the Japan Badminton Association, which made the economic pressure of self-funding his participation unbearable. To raise competition fees, he needed to independently choose sponsors; however, as a national team member, he would face various restrictions regarding brand endorsements and apparel. It is reported that starting in September 2024, even national team members with lower world rankings will need to self-fund their participation in competitions worldwide. Watanabe’s exit has exposed the serious financial difficulties faced by the Japan Badminton Association, prompting many badminton enthusiasts in Japan to initiate fundraising activities. On February 6, an anonymous individual donated a significant amount to the Japan Badminton Association, requesting that the amount not be disclosed. A relevant official from the association stated that the donation is substantial and will be discussed carefully and used appropriately. Previously, the Japan Badminton Association faced budget cuts from the Japan Olympic Committee and national sports funding due to hidden embezzlement issues involving a former employee. In the 2024 budget, the association’s funds were reduced from approximately 800 million yen to about 300 million yen.
