[Saba Sports News] The Brooklyn Nets are ready to embrace the memes.
Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the Nets are signing guard Killian Hayes to a one-year deal, giving him a chance to compete for a roster spot.
This move isn’t entirely surprising, as the Nets had been linked to the 22-year-old earlier this month. However, the signing is still likely to spark jokes.
Hayes, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2020 draft, has been labeled a bust, picked by the Detroit Pistons over future All-Stars like Tyrese Haliburton and Tyrese Maxey, as well as high-quality guards like Devin Vassell and Immanuel Quickley.
Now entering his fifth NBA season, Hayes has career averages of 8.1 points and 5.2 assists per game on poor 38/28/78 shooting splits. His bad shot selection and frequent turnovers have made him a target of online jokes, even when he had a supportive head coach in Detroit.
The Pistons waived Hayes last season, and no team had picked him up since. With the Nets focusing on player development after trading away Mikal Bridges, they will try their luck with the 6-foot-5 point guard.
