[Saba Sports News] New details have emerged about former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter’s involvement in an illegal gambling scandal.
Porter pleaded guilty on Wednesday in New York to a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to Jennifer Peltz of The Associated Press. During the court hearing, Porter admitted to leaving games early to clear substantial gambling debts.
“I know what I did was wrong, unlawful, and I am deeply sorry,” Porter told the court.
Porter’s sentencing is scheduled for December 18. He faces up to four years in prison and will likely be required to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution and fines.
Porter’s plea and confession confirm earlier reports that he attempted to pay off gambling debts by claiming injury and leaving games early. This ensured he failed to hit the over on several prop bets, with his co-conspirators having advance notice.
The 24-year-old Porter played 37 games in his NBA career for Memphis and Toronto before being banned for life due to his role in the scandal.
