[Saba Sports News] In a crucial development just days before the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, New Zealand’s senior pacer, Tim Southee, has received clearance to join the squad in India. Southee’s return is a welcome relief for the Blackcaps, who were grappling with multiple injuries leading up to the tournament.
After suffering a dislocated and fractured thumb during the England tour, Southee underwent surgery, casting doubt on his World Cup availability. However, his recovery has progressed well, and he is now ready to rejoin his teammates for the marquee event.
This positive news followed New Zealand’s impressive 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh. Kane Williamson, who is also set to make his return after an injury layoff, will lead the team, boosting morale and strengthening their World Cup prospects.
While Southee continues his recovery, New Zealand has called up pace-bowler Kyle Jamieson to join the World Cup squad in India for training, although he won’t be part of the official World Cup squad and won’t play in warm-up matches.
New Zealand has scheduled warm-up matches against Pakistan and South Africa before their tournament opener against England on October 5. The Kiwis aim to replicate their outstanding performances from the 2015 and 2019 World Cups when they reached the finals.
