[Saba Sports News] According to British media reports, a new rule will be implemented in the Premier League next season: when key decisions are made, only the captain is allowed to speak with the referee. The Premier League will formally implement the “Only Captains Can Talk to Referees” rule next season, consistent with UEFA’s policy this season across its competitions. Clubs are expected to approve this rule at next month’s annual general meeting. The referee management body, PGMOL, also hopes that England’s other league levels will adopt this new regulation. This rule has already been implemented in three UEFA club competitions this season. The new rule does not prohibit the other 20 players on the pitch from having routine interactions with the referee and assistants but requires that any dialogue regarding key game decisions must be conducted by the two team captains. If the goalkeeper is the captain, another field player can be designated as a representative to communicate with the referee. UEFA announced last July that referees will keep an open channel of communication with teams, explaining all decisions including VAR rulings. The statement emphasized that these explanations and clarifications are provided only to the captains, who are the only players authorized to communicate with referees respectfully and seek clarification. Captains are responsible for ensuring their teammates respect referees, maintain distance, and avoid crowding around officials.
