[Saba Sports News] Less than 24 hours after the airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, and with the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei, the international sports community has also descended into chaos. In particular, Indian badminton superstar Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, who was scheduled to participate in the All England Open Badminton Championships 2026 starting March 3 in Birmingham, had to withdraw from the event due to being stranded at the UAE’s Dubai Airport, a central hub in the Middle East.
Originally, Sindhu was not supposed to stay in Dubai, as there are many direct flights from India to London, the UK capital, but no direct flights to Birmingham. Therefore, she planned to transit through Dubai to reach Birmingham. However, the moment her flight from India landed in Dubai, military conflict erupted, and the UAE’s airspace was soon closed. Sindhu also revealed that she heard the sound of missiles being intercepted overhead, and explosions occurred near Dubai Airport. In this life-threatening situation, the Indian High Commission in Dubai activated its emergency mechanism. Embassy staff navigated through the chaos to relocate Sindhu and her team to a safe area, providing temporary accommodation and essential supplies.
The editor believes that while the competition can be postponed, life cannot be replaced, and Sindhu was forced to withdraw under these circumstances. It is hoped that the Badminton World Federation (BWF) does not penalize Sindhu for this. Although BWF has flexible regulations regarding top players’ absences from major events, this is the first case of withdrawal due to airspace paralysis caused by warfare. This incident starkly reveals the clash between sports spirit and the realities of war.
