[Saba Sports News] The Memphis Grizzlies have stayed quiet publicly about their surprising decision to part ways with head coach Taylor Jenkins. But a new report sheds light on what drove the move—and it all revolves around Ja Morant.
On ESPN’s Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast, reporter Tim MacMahon revealed that the Grizzlies made the coaching change with one goal in mind: optimizing their franchise star, Ja Morant. According to MacMahon, Morant was unhappy with the team’s new offensive system, which moved away from his preferred pick-and-roll-heavy style.
“This decision to do it now… this was a decision that was about optimizing Ja Morant,” MacMahon said, via RealGM. “Basically, this is a ‘Hey Ja, you’re still our guy. Everything we do is going to be based on what’s best for you.’”
MacMahon also mentioned that Morant had been the subject of trade speculation around the league and that there were concerns about his satisfaction with the team’s direction. While there’s no indication of personal conflict between Morant and Jenkins, the system shift appeared to be a sticking point.
By firing Jenkins, the Grizzlies are signaling they remain fully committed to building around Morant—especially with a pivotal offseason ahead.
The timing of the move raised eyebrows, as Memphis was 44–29 with just nine games left in the regular season. But the urgency behind the decision now seems tied directly to keeping Morant happy—and ensuring he remains the centerpiece of the franchise.
