[Saba Sports News] During a recent Pakistan Super League (PSL) match, Eliminator 2 between Peshawar Zalmi and Islamabad United in Karachi, an unfortunate incident occurred where the crowd targeted Islamabad United’s all-rounder Imad Wasim with “Babar, Babar” chants.
This behavior appeared to be a backlash against Imad’s previous criticisms of Pakistan captain Babar Azam, especially after the team’s disappointing run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. In an earlier encounter, Imad had even responded to similar chants by mimicking Lionel Messi’s goal celebration, which didn’t sit well with the fans.
Islamabad United’s captain, Shadab Khan, voiced his disappointment over the crowd’s conduct, highlighting the emotional impact such actions have on players who have dedicatedly served their country. He expressed sadness over the disrespect shown by the home crowd, underscoring the disconnect it creates for players who have achieved much for their nation.
The game itself saw Islamabad United opting to field first, with Peshawar Zalmi setting a target of 185/5, thanks in part to significant contributions from Saim Ayub and Mohammad Haris. Despite not taking wickets, Imad Wasim bowled economically. Islamabad United chased down the target, propelled by notable performances from Imad and Haider Ali, securing their spot in the PSL 2024 final against Multan Sultans.
