[Saba Sports News] Shaquille O’Neal, the retired Basketball Hall of Famer, recently made headlines for his critical remarks about Oklahoma City Thunder’s center Chet Holmgren. During an episode of “The Big Podcast with Shaq,” O’Neal expressed his disagreement with a co-host’s praise of Holmgren as ‘phenomenal.’ He argued that such high praise should be reserved for those who have proven themselves extensively in the league.
O’Neal stated, “‘Phenomenal’ isn’t the right word. He’s good, but don’t be going ‘promising’ and ‘great’ and ‘future Hall of Famer’… Y’all can’t be giving these people things who ain’t put in no work.” This stance is typical of O’Neal, who is known for his critical views on younger NBA talents, often framing it as motivation for them to excel.
Holmgren, at just 21 years old and only a couple of months into his first NBA season, has been delivering impressive performances. He’s averaging 17.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game, showcasing efficient three-point shooting and resilience against NBA-level competition. His contribution is a key factor in the Thunder’s notable 20-9 record, alongside teammates like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams.
Despite Holmgren’s promising start, O’Neal’s critique positions him as the latest young player to face such scrutiny from the basketball legend. It remains to be seen how Holmgren will respond to these comments, following the example of other NBA stars who have previously navigated O’Neal’s criticisms.
