[Saba Sports News] Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei stated that he has long aspired to give back to badminton following his retirement, and the launch of the Lee Chong Wei Cup has made this aspiration a reality. Lee revealed the tournament is designed to inspire youngsters from all walks of life to take up badminton and mature through competitive matches. Badminton has long united Malaysians, and he hopes the event can unlock the potential of emerging young shuttlers.
The inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup is set to be held in Kuala Lumpur from August 29 to September 6 this year, with registration opening on June 15 and restricted exclusively to Malaysian citizens. Adopting an innovative competition format of best-of-three races to 15 points, the tournament features three age divisions: Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17, covering five disciplines: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Boasting an overall prize fund of 100,000 Malaysian Ringgit (MYR), each division’s champion will earn a trial spot at the Badminton Academy of Malaysia.
In my opinion, this grassroots youth development initiative, spearheaded by an elite badminton star and endorsed by the national badminton federation, is a rare model across Asia. Its developmental focus merits recognition, yet its long-term effectiveness in nurturing talents and institutional sustainability remains to be proven with time. With ongoing refinements, it could evolve into a benchmark template for junior badminton development across Southeast Asia.
