[Saba Sports News] In the post-race interview after the Chinese Grand Prix, former British Formula 1 driver David Coulthard made a rather unprofessional decision: when instructions kept coming through his earpiece to move on and interview George Russell, he chose to stay put and continue with Andrea Kimi Antonelli through that emotionally overwhelmed moment. In the race, Antonelli overtook Lewis Hamilton and led to the finish, claiming the first Grand Prix victory of his career. In front of the cameras afterwards, the 19-year-old driver choked up and teared up, unable to contain his emotions. Coulthard recalled that Antonelli had seemed fairly composed at first, but during the interview his gaze appeared to fall on his father at the side of the track, and that instant triggered the emotional outpouring. Coulthard said that, to him, Antonelli was still a kid, and that moment was not just an ordinary interview but a young person’s dream coming true. For that reason he chose to ignore the director’s instruction to switch interviewees. He felt that forcing an interruption then would have missed a highly moving moment.
The editor believes this victory is not only an important milestone in Antonelli’s career but could also be the starting point for greater achievements. With Mercedes showing strong competitiveness in the 2026 season, the young driver is even regarded as one of the potential youngest contenders for a world championship.
