[Saba Sports News] On the evening of June 30, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) updated its official website with an article titled “BWF Approves Two Athletes to Compete as Individual Neutral Athletes”, stating that two badminton players holding Russian passports—Rodion Alimov and Maksim Ogloblin—have been granted permission to participate in BWF-sanctioned events under the status of “Individual Neutral Athletes”. As early as August 2023, the BWF Council issued a statement announcing that it had voted to approve a regulatory framework allowing athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under neutral status, provided they meet certain conditions. This decision aligns with the International Olympic Committee and the broader sports community’s principles regarding athletes’ open participation in international competitions and represents a joint effort to promote peace and unity. To facilitate this process, the BWF has established Competition Guidelines and formed an athlete eligibility review panel responsible for conducting due diligence and assessing all qualification requirements. Following comprehensive background checks, the panel concluded that neither of the two Russian athletes had engaged in any conduct contradicting the BWF or the Olympic movement’s mission of peace. They will be eligible to compete in BWF World Tour events starting from after August 11, 2025. According to available records, Alimov previously competed in mixed doubles and won the European Championships title in 2021 before the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Ogloblin is also a doubles specialist; at only 21 years old, he has just recently joined the senior ranks and has yet to establish himself on the professional scene.
