The U.S. secured Olympic gold in men’s basketball with a 98-87 win over France on Saturday, marking their fifth consecutive and 17th overall Olympic gold in the sport.
Following the win, USA Basketball’s official X account took a subtle jab at U.S. sprinter Noah Lyles by posting a picture of their gold medal ceremony with the caption, “Are we the World Champs now?” This was a clear reference to Lyles’ controversial comments last year questioning the use of “world champions” for NBA Finals winners, which had upset many NBA stars, including members of the Olympic team.
The gold medal game served as another reminder that the best basketball players in the world are in the NBA. Lyles, however, also gets to go home with a gold medal from the Paris Games, so both sides had their moment.
