What began in the afternoon as a joyful tribute to the players and coaching staff — filled with celebrations, singing, hugs and laughter — ended in fierce clashes. Late into the night, officers equipped with shields and batons, some patrolling on motorcycles, moved in to subdue the crowds assembled along Avenida 9 de Julio. The area surrounding the Obelisk was soon left desolate, its asphalt strewn with shattered glass bottles. Amid discarded rubber bullet casings, empty cans, broken glass and light-blue-and-white confetti, police pushed the crowd back nearly five blocks all the way toward Avenida de Mayo. Dozens of people were detained during the operation, though the city government has yet to release an official tally of arrests.
