[Saba Sports News] Washington Sundar has been drafted into the Indian squad as a last-minute replacement ahead of the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka. He steps in for Axar Patel, who sustained a left quadriceps strain during the Super Four match against Bangladesh, which India lost by six runs.
The news of Axar’s injury was confirmed by the BCCI on Saturday evening. Earlier, wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik hinted at Sundar’s inclusion in a cryptic tweet.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill downplayed the severity of Axar’s injury, describing it as “temporary” after the Bangladesh clash.
Axar’s recent form has raised questions about his selection, particularly his bowling. Although he made valuable contributions with the bat, his bowling figures have been less impressive in the tournament.
Sundar, who is part of the Asian Games squad, is expected to join the team and may feature in the final. His off-breaks could prove handy, especially against Sri Lankan left-handers in the powerplay.
Sundar’s most recent appearance was in the T20I series against Ireland last month. After the final, he is set to join the Asian Games squad in Bengaluru for a two-week preparation camp.
